Tall Ships Battle Sail – Ventura Harbor 2017

What’s up everyone it’s Sam Benner of Ventura Beach Properties and we had so much fun watching the Tall Ships arrive that Jeff and I were determined to find our way on one. After browsing the website we came across the perfect blend of history and explosives, the Battle Sail. With our families in tow we hopped aboard the mighty Hawaiian Chieftain.

After a quick introduction to the boat’s features from a crew member we shoved off from the dock and were on our way out of the Ventura Harbor and out to sea.

The crew, which was a diverse group of men and women quickly took to climbing up the very tall mast and unfurling the sails. Watching them fearlessly ascend to the top and their footing secured only with ropes was an impressive sight to see.

Before we knew we were at the entrance to the Pacific Ocean, our captain at the helm. My son Dylan immediately gravitated to our sea savvy leader asking questions like ‘how much do you get paid’ and ‘do you ever use Google Maps’?

So this trip wasn’t one of those sit back and enjoy the show kind of deals. We had jobs and responsibilities. The first mate jumped right in to give us instructions on how we, yes we were going to be in charge of the mizzen. Gulp. Jeff and his wife Darai wisely made their way to the front of the ship to take in the incredible views of Ventura from open sea.

Without further ado, the main sail made it’s mighty debut. “It’s Alive” the captain yelled doing his best Dr. Frankenstein impression.

There wasn’t much time for fanfare and celebration as another ship approached us with unclear intentions.

The captain jumped into action and gave us instructions as to where the most vulnerable points of the enemy ship were and we took our battle stations.

The Lady Washington creeped closer, moving into the line of battle… a heated exchange of cannon fire began.

The crew worked in unison adjusting the sails quickly so the ship could position itself for another pass at our mortal enemy who was quickly approaching. The captain called to our gunner, with the coolest goggles ever, for one final shot. The Roundys surveying the damage declared us the victor.

We proudly returned to shore allowing for plenty of time to enjoy the sunset and of course plenty of time to goof around. The aptly named ‘Too Much Fun’ joined us as we basked in our victory.
